Sporting Memories Network: growth and funding application

Because of our work: Sporting Memories Network was able to make a robust stage 2 application for Big Lottery Funding

Sporting Memories Network  takes a people-centred approach to engage with older people via their interest in sport.  They provide a range of activities, all sport-focused, that include: physical activity; games; reminiscence activity and; inter-generational work.

Their flexible and community-focused sessions help to improve people’s confidence, wellbeing, cognitive function, balance and health. They offer meaningful ways for older people to engage with others and to overcome loneliness and isolation.

We helped the network to identify suitable areas for new activities which would form the basis for its People in the Lead Big Lottery Fund application.

Stage One: desk research: We identified geographical areas which had high levels of older people, chronic health conditions, and incidence of dementia.

Stage two: primary research: We used on line and offline surveys to understand the need and demand for SMN’s activities in target areas. This research also captured information on baseline wellbeing, social inclusion and activity levels. Surveys were even able to identify people who were interested in taking part in, or volunteering with, a local SMN group.

The data gathered through this exercise was key to providing a robust Stage 2 application for Big Lottery funding.

“I’m pretty happy with all the data we’ve finally got, and I feel I can build a fairly compelling case around each location.”
